If you liked A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, you'll enjoy this, it hits nearly all the same emotional beats, and follows the same plot. I can definitely see the arguments that say this book doesn't add much. On the other hand I loved exploring the capital and the extra details and worldbuilding, as always there is such attention from Meadows on linguistics and queer-inclusive social norms, and the healing and developing relationship between the two MCs is lovely to read. The mystery and politicking are on a slightly larger and more complicated scale, but they do find out who is behind it all by being invited to lunch, which echoes my frustration in the first book, but was wildly more forgivable here by dint of them being outplayed.

Plot is basically the same as the first book and the main villain does a similar reveal in the last 10%. Unfortunately, our two MCs take two steps back in this book, ignoring all character development to start back at...well, not even square one, really. 90% of this book is angst that could have been avoided by characters actually talking to each other. 5% consent issues if not outright sexual assault. 5% politics.

I love this story and the narrators make it that much better! The voice acting is top notch. I’m not sure if there’s another book to come, but I sure hope so!
