Very different from the first one; better.
Around the halfway point I realized it's a cyberpunk story, but honestly that should've been obvious from the very start, given it is About modern internet culture

The first book blew my mind, and made me extremely anxious to read this one. And though I think it is great! I have to admit I didn't finish it in one go, in fact I had a pause of over a year in between.

That was mostly because I didn't have the brain space for it. This is a story that always goes full speed ahead, never giving you time to breathe, which takes you in and drags you along hut also means you have to be available to deal with that.

I loved everyone in this book, but Maya is and always will be my love and is the reason I kept going.

I think this book proofs that scifi can take place in our time and our world. Things don't have to be alien to teach us something about ourselves. And things don't have to be exactly like us either.

I don't know if hopeful dystopian fiction was a genre that existed before Han wrote AART but with this book he certainly cemented it.

July 2020
I think I enjoyed this even more than the first one. It's a fascinating piece of speculative fiction and a wild ride with a satisfying ending. The story is told from multiple POVs, which I particularly enjoyed because of how much I love all the characters. Green's writing is funny and clever and the story feels so contemporary, developing the themes covered in the first one; capitalism, technology, collaboration and power. I know I'll be thinking about it for a while

I had just as much fun as the first time. It's my favourite sort of speculative fiction, set in a world which feels like ours but with some very significant differences. I listened to the audiobook this time and I thought the whole cast was great. I love all the characters and it's such a captivating story. There's so much happening and I love just going along for the ride.

I enjoyed this one as well! I think I liked the first one a little bit better, but not enough to lower the star rating on this one. They're both very well done. I think the first one made me think more about society's interaction with technology and fame, whereas this book caused me to focus more on how willing we are to let technology ruin us. (It's not as depressing as it sounds-- this book manages to be realistic, yet hopeful.) I think I just enjoyed the focus of the first book a bit more and even though the tech jargon is greatly simplified, it still went over my head a bit at times. I don't know anything about crypto, for example, so in those parts I was just dumbly nodding along. I really liked this duology, and I'm excited to see if Hank Green continues to write in the future. For all the love of John Green, I think he might be stuck in YA-manic-pixie-dream-girl-land, while Hank Green's work has a more mature, balanced feel.
