If the first book was “stopping the end of the world” levels of intense, this book is “the day after when you have to return to work madness.”

Patrick has more personal agency this time around, choosing to help Lucien’s group of vampires, which puts him right in the middle of an Aztec god’s path. Just so happens that the vampire Lucien wants dead is also working with Death and is trying to blow out the protective magic over NYC subway transit.

I really like the dynamic between Patrick and Jono. They’ve got an established relationship starting, but it’s not lovey-dovey. It’s about trust and vulnerability. Patrick needs someone to care about him and stop him from self-harming, such as quit smoking. And Jono needs someone to call his own, who doesn’t shy away from standing up for Jono.

The issue is the majority of the story is a 5 star read while the ending bit falls down to 3 stars. Mainly the sex scene, which I get is supposed to accomplish healing closure after Patrick’s near miss with a sexual assault, but there’s something about it that felt same-old rehash. I’m concerned that the rest of the series will structure around the same sort of sex over and over again.

I’m gonna try taking a break from the series to see if I can get the spark back when I dig back in.

I loved this so much more than book one and yes it is because of the audiobook!
