I REALLY enjoyed this book. Normally I don't get spooked when I'm reading but there's one scene in here that really got me. The story moves slowly but the pay off in the end is well worth it. Plus, mushrooms are a major plot point! What's not to love?

 A truly gothic tale with darkness, mystery and horror. The examination of female rage and patriarchal practices is done well with a cathartic conclusion. The suspense and mystery are paced perfectly meaning that I couldn’t put it down. It was refreshing to read a gothic story not in a standard European setting, in fact commenting on European exploitation of the Americas and the horrors of colonization for both workers and more prominently women. A dark yet enjoyable novel with a lot to say.

I read Silver Nitrate last year and I just knew that Silvia Moreno-Garcia was an author for me. I'm happy to say that this book lived up to the hype! I do wish going into it I hadn't been spoiled about the book being

fungal horror

because it would have made certain plot points harder to spot. I had just been talking to a friend about how incest is a really common Gothic trope, but

not cannibalism

, which is strange because I feel like they can do similar narrative work in a story - and then this book comes along and backs me up! This book genuinely creeped me out. I can't wait to read more of her back catalog!
