I've read a few alternative-history vampire novels, and some of them have been pretty good, but this was not among the best of them. It was a little hard to get worked up over two rival vampire clans engaged in a drug war. Even so, a better editor could have improved the book a lot. Some of the dialogue and imagery just didn't make any sense and I desperately wanted to go over it with a pencil, except this was a library book. The premise had potential, but it could have been executed better.

Oh boy. I don’t know how many times I can say it but if you’re doomed by the narrative, DON’T fall in love with your Renfield! And don’t get a Renfield who will fall in love with you!! If you’ve got a black cat vibe DO NOT find a cronie with golden retriever energy!! Basic knowledge people!!!!

Not my favorite by this author but sets out to tell a story of an adventure in escaping narcos with a hint of romance, and it does it well on the back of very interesting worldbuilding - would definitely love to read another story in this world with other vampires
Thought the characters of Rodrigo and Anna were underutilized, and that it was not well-explained why Bernadino flipping to being so willing to help them, but it makes sense considering the short length of this novel. It could have easily been 18 hours with plenty of hijinks and I woulda been here for every minute, having a blast!
