3.75 stars. I enjoyed this! I thought the characters were cool. A big thing I've found I love in books, especially political gritty fantasies like this, is seeing perspectives from different sides of the conflicts. especially when you can really see their opposing views on the issues. I didnt totally give it 4 stars though, because in my personal opinion it wasn't done insanely well. you could definitely see the opposing views with 2 of the perspectives, but with Atl and Domingo's perspective I feel like Alt didn't have much conviction at times? I don't know how to describe it. but yeah, all things considered this was a book I enjoyed and I think the ending was good as well.

A gritty, neo-noir addition to the vampire canon! I read Moreno-Garcia's other book, "Mexican Gothic," last October and absolutely loved it. After reading "Certain Dark Things," it seems her imagination knows no bounds. Moreno-Garcia is a master world-builder; her re-imagining of Mexico City and fusion with the vampire genre is highly original and deeply compelling. She took something old and transformed it into something fresh that still pays homage to the original. The story definitely lives up to it's title: it's dark! Often violent and twisted, this book is great if you're in the mood for something a little darker and chilling.
As much as I loved the world-building within "Certain Dark Things," I couldn't help but feel it was missing a certain X factor. Perhaps I was just unconsciously comparing it against the spectacular "Mexican Gothic," but I just wasn't as wowed by the plot or characters. Domingo and Atl each have their charms, but I thought their romance felt forced and culminated in a rather disappointing (though fitting) ending.
If you're a fan of vampires, noir, or crime thrillers, then you will find something to love within this book. Perfect if you're looking to embrace the spooky season.

A great read for someone who likes action-packed gritty crime novels with a bit of cheesy romance and sci-fi thrown in. That person is not me, but it was entertaining and I could follow the plot easily while kinda drunk.
thoroughly engaging, and the ending was so consistent with the characterizations.
