The best modern vampire story I've read from an established titan of horror. Fantastic read.

As the author puts it herself, “this is a violent neo-noir”. In an alternate world where vampires and humans co-exist there have developed vampire free zones- Mexico City is one of those. There are at least 5 subspecies of vampires, each with their own characteristics. Atl is the head of her clan in Northern Mexico. Descendants of high priestesses of Aztec temples, tradition is very important. Her clan is the dominant narco group when another clan of European vamps move in. These new vamps are younger and don’t seem to adhere to tradition. She is on the run in Mexico City when she stumbles across Domingo, a street kid that wants to be involved with her.
The novel has a very noir feel to it. It is violent and gritty. What I needed was more build out of characters. I needed more depth to all of them. Each character felt very surface-level. While the story and plot was great, I struggled to be invested in each of the characters.
The Vampire Encyclopedia/Dictionary at the end of the book would have been extremely helpful at the BEGINNING of the book.

This was so much better than I was expecting.
This reads like a neo-noir film, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth the read.

Vampires in Mexico City! That and the author being SMG meant this was already going to be a 5 star read for me. It’s a refreshing take on vampires.

classic vampire noir set in Mexico City -- though predictable, it was a refreshing read! Painted a world outside of euro-centric vampires that kept me engaged and interested.
