I hated what happened to Heathen(Rabbit) and Ellis(Dolly) when they were children. I hated what they had to endure at the hands of Ellis' father and his business associates and what happened to Ellis mother because she didn't agree with her husband's activities.
I loved that Ellis and Heathen eventually get their revenge on the men who hurt them and so many other children. And I loved that even though Eddie didn't hated Heathen for stealing his best friend he still let them go when he could've arrested them for their crimes. I also think Eddie may have a little darkness himself, just maybe not at bad as Heathen and Ellis. The way he reacted to wanting to be called the mad hatter and the fact he let them go when he didn't have to, made me think he may not be quite as straight laced as the other two thought.
So overall I absolutely loved this book. And is definitely recommend but beware of the trigger warnings. I do wish the author had put more specific trigger and content warnings instead of the generalized one she has on the book description. I was definitely shocked by some of the things in this book and would've liked more of a forewarning before getting into this book.

Nope. This was a big nope for me. Nothing in this book kept me wanting to read more. Not because the author is a bad writer, because she is not a bad writer, just the whole Alice in Wonderland theming killed it for me. One word: Bored.
I tried to care about Ellis/Dolly and Heathen/Rabbit but I just didn't. I couldn't even convince myself that I felt sympathy for them. This is all probably a me issue. I don't love Alice in Wonderland and then adding that it as the main characters strongest traits really just put me off. Both Ellis and Heathen have fucked up lives and that's about all that stuck with me. Also if I had to hear about Heathen's black heart cracking one more time, I was going to throw the book.
So this book wasn't for me but it could be for others. On level of dark, it's not the darkest thing I've read. Yea, fucked up things happened in this book but some of the stuff that I would deem "dark" weren't talked about in detail vs other books of read (i.e. Hunting Adeline).
