I'm flailing because it's over but I dont want it to be over because... well just because ok!
I loved the characters especially the most unexpected one the House and surrounding town of Promise. Yes, they have personalities and do things so they totally class as characters - sentience is never essential.
The pace flowed effortlessly keeping m intrigued at every twist and turn, constantly second guessing what I thought I knew. Was it aliens? Is she secretly crazy? Was it fae or crone who stole her mother away?
My only qualm with the entire thing was that the final 50ish pages felt rushed. Small potatoes in an otherwise spectacular debut novel. I cant wait to read De Becerra's next novel, Oasis, when it drops next year.
Last thing I have to say - even if you take no other advice from me this year, read this book. As soon as you can...

Would’ve liked this more if the ending didn’t feel spectacularly rushed. So much felt like it was spent on building up the weirdness that when it came to the climax, it was over pretty quick.
As for the good, I actually like Hayden and I also liked the love interest. The little town of Promise was interesting too. Would’ve loved to have met more locals and how they normalize the weirdness imbedded in the town.
Spoiler
Also would’ve liked to know the Nibelung more. They are literally faceless characters except for one dude. I wanted to know why these people needed to find a new home or were so focused on world domination. Why is any of this happening? Supposedly the army comes first then others. Others being family and children? Would’ve loved to have seen them portrayed as real people seeking salvation rather than one-note faceless army looking world to conquer. Also Hayden’s mom basically screwed her own people over because humanity is better? Lol. To betray your own people needs better character then ‘I fell in love...so I changed my mind’.As for the good, I actually like Hayden
Spoiler
though I don’t understand why she was so special or powerful compared to fellow hybrids or full Nibelung

del was lowkey a shitty friend and the romance added literally nothing it was SOOO unnecessary (and i NEVER say that)

Ugh. I didn't love this one. I really, really wanted to. I found this such an inconsistent, clunky and frustrating book to read and, in all honesty, I probably would've DNF'd it if it wasn't The YA Circle book for October.
