"If I could not be with my mother, I would be her."

My friend let me borrow a copy of the book so when I went to Korea during the last week of June, I thought that it would be the best time to read this! I'm sort of sad that I was not able to finish the book while I was in Korea because at the latter part of the book, Michelle was describing Korea in a way that would have been better if I was in there with her (in imagination while I was in Korea, of course). Although at some point, I switched to audiobook because I still believe that memoirs are best read through audiobooks.

What an emotional and raw memoir. I love the way the author explores her relationship with her mother and her grief through traditional Korean cuisine. She gets so vulnerable, it’s such a good pick if you’re having to deal with losing someone.

“Love was an action, an instinct, a response roused by unplanned moments and small gestures, an inconvenience in someone else’s favor.”

Such a heartfelt and raw recollection of the author and her mother.

I’ve been curious about this one for a long time and it was what I was expecting. A lot of grief and a lot of food.
