As someone who also has an Asian immigrant mother, this book made my heart swell so much in a way I didn’t know was possible. I’m still crying and probably will for a while.

I picked this memoir of growing up as a Korean-American woman as I saw it was about food, and I’m getting into Korean food. It didn’t disappoint, I kept looking up the dishes that litter the pages and accompany most of the book’s events. It’s a life story told through food, and also about loss and grief. Initially I couldn’t see what was likeable about the mother, but maybe that’s the same process the author goes through, learning to love her as she is, almost before it’s too late.
