Until I saw this on a friend's "currently reading" list, I had forgotten this book existed.
i read this book when it first came out and I was in college. i remember being utterly depressed, but impressed by the writing in this heartbreaking novel.
i felt such a connection to every character. each one was written with such spirit and life, i got lost in the story as if it were happening around me.
i know that this story warrants a second read, as it took me to a place of despair and hope and frustration all at the same time.

Single angry mom and her 3 teenage children struggle to survive in a little town. A con man takes advantage of mom.
In spite of the poor reviews, I stuck with this to the end. The book reminded me of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I found the characters engaging enough to finish the book.
I tried, 260 pages of trying. So well written, but it's so depressing and heavy, I just couldn't bear to read it anymore.
Ugh. 740 pages of dysfunction with no redemption in sight.

This is the WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. No redeeming qualities, no value whatsoever. I read it when it was an Oprah book club pick, in the summer of 1997. It opens with a masturbation scene and I swear to god goes NOWHERE for hundreds of pages. I haven’t read 50 Shades of Gray but I would recommend it over this 3 pound pile of drivel. What a waste of time. It’s been 21 years since I read it and I still resent the wasting of my time. Don’t bother. Please.
