A pig and a spider - so different and yet truer friends to each other than a pig to a pig. A nice read that emphasizes a lot on the greatness of friendship and the sacrifices that true friends make for each other.

“”You have been my friend”, replied Charlotte. “That itself is a tremendous thing.””

Such a great book. I never read this as a child as most people in the US did, but I see why it’s often taught in school. I loved the imagery, the magic, and the life lessons. I think it would do many of us well to give this a reread.

I read this over my break for old times sake. It was a foundational book and movie growing up, and the magic and impact don’t diminish with age. “But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If *I* had been very small at birth, would you have killed *me*?”

“This is the most terrible case of injustice I’ve ever heard of.”

This is a childhood favorite of mine and I expected to give it 5 stars. The opening especially is incredibly strong and I would say the first 2-3 chapters are a master class in word economy and getting a story moving.

However, as I went on there was simply too many little things that bugged me that I could not bring myself to give the full stars.
Charlotte gave an explanation at the very end that helped, but in reality we see very little of Charlotte and Wilbur being friends. There's plenty of Charlotte doing things for Wilbur but they have little interaction. I don't ever really see a reason either of them are friends with the other.

I also greatly dislike how Fern's character progressed. I get that growing up was the theme and it was a different time. That said her suddenly not caring about Wilbur and just talking to some off page boy instead is bordering infuriating. She's only 8 for one thing and Wilbur was her sole focus in life less than a year previous and for months after. I find it unbelievable that she doesn't care about his biggest moment she worked to reach and no longer cares after either. I remember this bugging me even as a young child, and if anything it bothers me more as an adult.

Thirdly the pace was a little too fast. More than once I had to double check that I didn't miss any pages because all the characters acted like scenes took place that were not there. I feel a few more scenes would have done things well.
It's a classic. It's beautiful. It's sad. It's real. I love it. But I can't call it an unquestionable masterpiece.

read for school.
