THE FEELS. It is beyond me why this is just a Newbery honor book and not a Newbery winner. I think I need to read the winner of the 1953 Newbery, 'Secret of the Andes' next to see what the hullabaloo is about.

I had heard of the title for many years but I imagined it would be a more gothic children's story. Maybe because my brain made the connection with The Cure song Charlotte Sometimes. There are no goths in this tale of American rural life. At the beginning of the tale a piglet, the runt of the litter is saved from the chopping block by Fern, an eight year old with an overactive imagination growing up on a farm. She names the pig Wilbur and often spends her time in the barn with Wilbur and the other animals. The axe is always a background threat for Wilbur, the other farm animals think will be fattened up for Christmas and the colder weather. Enter, Charlotte a spider determined to save Wilbur from an early death. Charlotte spins words in the web of the title to make the farm folk there is something special about the pig, too special to be killed. This is an enchanting tale about friendship and growing up.
