Absolutely love how everything ties together - so satisfying to see all the mini narratives woven together by the end.

Another fun mystery featuring Detective Kaga. He himself is the titular 'newcomer,' as he has just been transferred to the Nihonbashi precinct.

This book has a refreshing direction to unfolding the mystery. Instead of following the detective as he is called to the scene, surveilles and questions witnesses, and ultimately hunts down the suspects, the book unfolds from the various points of view of witnesses, who may or may not even realize they are part of an investigation. The book is divided into 9 parts, which read like little vignettes of the people, places, and shops the murder victim visited before she was killed. Somewhere in this huge quagmire of people lurks that person who killed her. Kaga is there, dressed super casually, exploring his new district and following various threads of the victim's life, slotting various pieces together. Things that don't make sense at the scene at explained in a way that ultimately does make sense, once the people involved are known. The lead detective thinks Kaga is wasting his time on inconsequential details and is happy to be shot of him most of the time, but of course it is this circuitous road that leads to the killer and the motive behind the murder.

I think the book does a good job of showing how a traumatic event like a murder effects a lot of people, beyond the victim and their immediate friends and family members. There are lots of people who are tangentially involved here, and the various directions they are moving are very interesting, IMO.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the mini stories of suspects.. but after like the third, I was eating it up and wanted more!! I just love how clever Kaga is ugh. The crime itself was interesting enough, but this felt more like a novel to show Kagas skill, and I was fully okay with that.

Keren.

Udah, itu aja. Aku masih agak bingung kalo baca buku-buku detektif yang bahas kasus pembunuhan kaya gini. Jadi, walaupun banyak ga ngertinya tapi instingku nyuruh buat pencet bintang paling kanan.

Udah sih, itu aja.

there were so many characters. . . it was kinda difficult to keep track of them all, but i still liked these bits and pieces we get from each “family”, from the neighborhood. while the focus of the plot was, obviously, solving the crime, i enjoyed how each “dysfunctional dynamic” gets solved whenever a chapter ends. it was really well written, too!

i hoped we’d get to see more of kaga’s train of thoughts. i liked how they described him - the newcomer of this neighborhood, but we almost never got into his head. his methods, if any, were explained in dialogues, which makes them easier to understand but idk i feel like the mystery itself was kinda meh. still enjoyable though!

An amazing crime book, I never ever imagined reading such a calming and heart-warming crime book. The characters were strong and prominent in their own ways. With each action, emotion and sentence, it really showed the kind of person the character was (it felt real and human).
