Higashino's Detective Kaga is a kendo champion frequently described as "steely" - with exception to how he treats the witnesses (many) and suspect (you decide).

The form of this work delivers an opportunity for intimate vignettes - much like "First Lie Wins".

I often find myself looking for Higashino's novels even though I haven't quite finished the one I'm working through at that time.

An imaginative structure lifts this above the norm. Mini mysteries are solved in order to illuminate the main murder mystery. It felt like I was strolling around Tokyo.

Oke, this is the second Detective Kaga series that I read after Malice.

The story uses third person point of view, and easy to understand. In this story, clearly, you can still see how persistent Detective Kaga for finding informations in his cases. A man with a broad perspective and thinking, intelligent ofc. He is always described as a man in his thirties who usually wears a boxy undershirt, and in this story; soft-spoken, kind, and so gentlemanly.

The details of the murder case are explained in the final chapter, meaning that in the early chapters we have to make our own efforts to piece together the case. I prefer Detective Kaga here, rather than Malice.

Closer to a 3.5. Book is written in a strange way—the multiple short-story style is explained by Kaga himself, but it’s a bit too matter-of-factly. Might just be the nature of translation.
