Loved the structure of the story and how we get to know each individual who was even briefly related to the case in such depth and how each story ties up in the end. But the mystery in itself wasn’t anything extra ordinary or mind blowing to me. It’s the writing and the overall vibes that is worth mentioning!

Although it was a tad different from Higashino's other translated works, I loved the story. It was immensely character driven, and I like the plots-within-plot style of writing.
When it comes to crime fiction, [a:Keigo Higashino|117366|Keigo Higashino|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1289592746p2/117366.jpg] is probably one of my favourites, and Newcomer, albeit simpler than his other books that I have read, was pretty good. Detective Kaga in solving the murder of a forty-five year old woman, solves smaller riddles for the community, and all of them tied together form a well written and engrossing story.
Each of the characters, given their small time in the spotlight, was fleshed out well, and so were their respective stories, and that is perhaps what I loved the most in this book.
It was quite a quick read, and the translation was lucid and smooth. It took me just a day to swallow it up. Crime fiction heads would find it very enjoyable, especially as a book to have during long layover at busy airports.

Detective Kaga is a kinder gentler Holmes type detective who cares for the community around him. The story is like a stone thrown on a pond sending out concentric ripples & each ripple is a section relating to a person in the community & then they all come together & the crime is solved with a lot of humanity

I’m head over heals in love with this writer. First the Detective Galileo series, then this series with Kaga and they are all absorbing reads!

But, one is very different from the first Kaga novel. The sense of community is brilliant. It is a brilliantly complex puzzle and so much fun.

A bit surprised honestly because the writing was SO stilted compared to his other books. I enjoyed the story but the transitions were horrible and read like a script at times. It felt so sloppy and like a rough draft.
