A whodunit told from the perspective of different witnesses, exploring their lives and the little mysteries in them while inching slowly towards uncovering the mystery of the original crime.
After the 4th or 5th witness story, it made me not care as much about them but only look forward to parts where the detective comes in to talk to them.
Not a page turner for me, but if you like a slow paced mystery, you will enjoy this.

The story starts off kinda slow especially with so many characters introduced right away to establish everyone’s alibis related to the victim. But what’s brilliant here is how everything connects & carries its own meaning. There’s one main case but while detective kaga works to solve it, he somehow ends up helping locals with their everyday problems too. This naturally builds a bond between him and the community. Tbh i’m impressed by how kaga handles everything. It’s like he’s solving life itself not just the case
Oddly paced. The Galileo series had better characterizations, but this was not a bad read either. It is more slice-of-life than mystery though, since the details are never revealed until the last few pages. Some parts of the book are especially annoying; for example, the way most vignettes mention that Kaga is a "very intelligent detective". Nothing to really recommend, rounding down from 2.5 because of the annoying sensationalism and overly contrived instances of "intelligence". Plus a mystery with no clues until the end is hardly a good mystery. Also, the portrayal of women in particular, is just awful.
