A very very cute m/m romance. A little predictable but fun and cute. I definitely suggest listening to it because the narrators voice is smooth like honey.

This is definitely a book I’m going to be recommending to people. I read it cover to cover in two days. It’s exactly the kind of queer romcom I’m always looking for, so don’t be afraid to check it out. It’s my first Alexis Hall book so don’t ask me how it stands up to the rest of their work.

The thing that grabbed me the most was the character development. Not only were the main characters, Luc and Oliver, relatable and well-rounded, but the whole cast of characters felt so alive and memorable. And you can’t really go wrong with the fake relationship trope, can you? Hall also nailed the humor and balanced it well with the angst and pining.

I know a lot of people have been comparing this to Red, White, and Royal Blue, but honestly, I don’t see why that is. Other than being mlm romcoms with some heavy angst and pining on the side, they’re very different books. Change out mlm for a het romance, and we’d have to be calling every single romance novel ever written the next of whatever came before it, which feels silly to me. I loved RWRB, of course, but Boyfriend Material has made its own place in my heart.

This book came highly recommended, but I am not sure it hit the mark for me. I was really hoping for a Red/White/Royal Blue type read, but it fell pretty short of that. The characters were a little irritating at times, and I kept putting it down and not wanting to pick it back up. It took almost a month to finish. Not the worst thing I’ve ever read, but not a favorite. Could maybe give it 3.5 stars.
