Mind-expanding story for most students; protagonist is in 6th grade and struggles to read though she is a gifted artist, does mental math with acuity, and is a divergent thinker. Students in a similar situation will not be able to read this book, but it could be a good read aloud for parents and/or teachers. There are some tired stereotypes in the book (unrepentant bully/mean girl, male teacher saving the day when the female teachers and administrator view Ally, the protagonist, as a trouble maker instead of a student who needs help). Although the book is marketed to middle school, it seems perfectly appropriate for 3rd or 4th graders, particularly because the 6th graders in the story do not really seem that old. Age 9+

My aunt recommended this to my son. She said it is her favorite book. She has several copies just to loan out. I bought it and my son really enjoyed it. I forgot about it until I saw the bright colors on the shelf this weekend. What a lovely book! I wish I read it earlier. I laughed and cried. I truly felt for Ally in so many ways as a mom and teacher. I want to be a teacher like Mr. Daniels and write a book like Ms. Hunt.

SCHOOL LIBRARIAN REVIEW: Most everyone I know has already read this book...but if you haven't, you should. Similarly, I have yet to see a library that doesn't already have this in their collection. If you don't have it...please get it.

A girl who has moved around a lot because her father is in the military has made it through years of schooling without anyone catching on to the fact that she can't read. Her go-to plan is to get in so much trouble that she gets out of reading aloud by going to the office.

This all changes when a new teacher comes into her life and sees her creativity and drive rather than her failings.

This book will make your heart feel so warm. This was such a beautiful story filled with friendship, hope, and grit. Every middle schooler should read this and adults too!
