Another perfect and heavily underlined Baldwin. Not only is he forever and always relevant to everyone, his writing is also incredible. Often I find that essay writers are so concerned with their presetation and so cought up with their ideas, that they completely distance themselves from the text, which makes it cold and fabricated. But Baldwin feels very present in his writing. The rage and panic is boiling under the surface. He doesn't write to comfort his readers. Yet it is crystal clear and eloquent. He is trying to find the truth, however it makes you feel.

“I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am, also, much more than that. So are we all.”

Unsurprisingly, incredible and eloquent. So much was said in such a small space, so many powerful sentences and points made. James Baldwin's mastery of words continues to fascinate me. Completely reaffirmed that I need to read more of his works.

Baldwin hits the nail on the head so often for me. He says things I already believe/know, but illustrates it in a tangible way. A quote I stuck with was, “The root function of language is to control the universe by describing it.” He gets me. I’ve engaged with his work at the perfect time.
