I am honestly very surprised to say that this book gripped me so much more than the first one. i almost considered not continuing the series because i thought the first book was kind of mid. but this pulled me in in the first chapter and wouldn’t let me go. a lot of people felt the opposite about book two, and i can see why. i don’t know why i had a better time this time around- maybe just a different headspace.
it’s a slightly terrifying thing to read about dystopian America while we’re actively entering dystopian america in reality, but the characters in this book make it worth the read anyway. Braken has done a great job of creating distinct, nuanced characters. she went out in a limb by introducing some new lead characters (and eliminating a prior lead) in the sequel, but it paid off, and i found myself falling for the new characters quickly.
my only gripe is with Braken’s writing style. she has this way of writing that can be a bit confusing to me. i can’t entirely explain it but ill often read something and then a few sentences later, realize i misinterpreted what was said and i have to go back and reread the sentence a few more times to really understand. had this just happened once or twice, i would’ve dismissed it, but i found myself doing this several times throughout the book. that’s the only big reason for a half star deduction- i honestly really enjoyed everything else (well…except for that one thing because WHAT THE HECK? i forgot YA can be cruel too).

The second book in The Darkest Minds series was even better than the first! There were good twists and turns that I didn't see coming & for a second book I still felt satisfied at the conclusion. I have new ships setting sail and I'm loving the direction the series is going. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
