Yesterday Crumb starts the book kept in a cage in a travelling circus, she also has a piece of ice put into her heart via a curse at the beginning.ros_lanta's review against another edition

This Teacup is brimming with whimsy. It's magical, nonsensical and adorable - I expect when there are more reviews available for it, the word "whimsical" will appear on repeat. There are some really delightful moments - I particularly loved the visit to the Afterlife Immigration Bureau (dentists have special dispensation to visit because their skills are in short supply).
I'm fairly sure this is the author's debut novel, and if I'm honest it feels like it. The worldbuilding has so much promise, but something just felt a little bit lacking for me. At times it felt a bit rushed, trying to do too much at once. I liked the writing style though and I did enjoy the story.
If I have one significant issue with the book, it's the initial setup, with Yesterday living in a cage in a circus, where she had apparently been kept since a very young age. I don't mind it when kids books get dark, but that felt too traumatic for a book with such a light tone, and it also made me question many things - such as, who taught her to read? Perhaps these will be addressed in the sequel.
As I read the book, I noted a number of references to other books - lines that were similar to famous book quotes, names of characters. Perhaps some of these were coincidences (as I was actively looking out for similarities, I may have read too much into it?), but there were some that I think had to be deliberate, which intrigued me.
Despite a few issues, I do think many kids will love this book and I will gladly read book 2.
