Pretty good. All the detective work in the secret building and the new characters introduced were cool. I’m also finding myself really enjoying Matsuda’s character. He provides some levity in what is otherwise a fairly serious story.

I’m not sure how I feel about Light being a good guy now. I feel like it takes away one of the best parts of the series, which is his tenuous rivalry-friendship dynamic with L that was interesting to explore. Light isn’t a pathological liar anymore and I miss that aspect of the story.

The evil businessman murder people were interesting, and honestly feels like a much more likely use of the Death note than Light’s plan. It has been cool to see all the different ways that people have used this power. Light started with his misplaced idealism. Misa used the power with a weird fangirl-like devotion. And whoever the business Kira is uses it to get money and power. I’m curious of who else will get death notes throughout the story, and how they will choose to use its power. Maybe Light will get the death note again and use it differently with his current perspective? I think I just want him to be evil again lmao.

It's really interesting to see just how much being Kira has twisted Light's personality from what it originally was. I also really like how well L and Light get along, it makes me almost wish that they were a crime fighting duo instead of enemies, but then we wouldn't have this amazing story. And the comedy in this volume was really great, especially with L's constant insults to Matsuda.

After loving the hell out of this series so far, this volume was a bit of a letdown for me. To explain why I have to put it in spoiler tags though!

Up until now, the series has certainly been plot-driven, but what actually kept me reading more than anything else was all the moral and character implications of the story. The exploration of horrific power and its psychological effects on those who wield it is so darkly fascinating; the conflicted feeling of not knowing who I actually root for, and wanting to see how these intelligent characters outsmart each other, have been the main draws.

But here, Light has temporarily removed his memories, and all the things that I enjoy most about the series are largely absent. This volume is just plot, and has very little in terms of character development. I flew through this volume not because I really cared about what was happening, but because I was desperate to see Light regain his memories and go back to the interesting character I missed.

Still, I can appreciate the value of this turn in the series from a storytelling perspective. It is pretty shocking to see just how much Light's personality changes when he temporarily loses his powers and memories. He reverts back to someone so much purer, more innocent, and more principled.

There can be no mistaking what the author is trying to say here: It is the power itself that is corrupting Light and turning him into such an evil figure.

This volume kinda slows things down a bit. The characters are in new positions that they need to learn to navigate. Also, I just feel like the mysteries that they are setting up now are not as interesting as the ones that were set up and somewhat revealed. I miss the cat and mouse game that is pretty absent in this volume, but overall I can possibly see as to what is being set up.
