Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is a reflection on life, career, and healing from addiction.

This memoir is, in a word, gut-wrenching. It would be so on its own merits, but it is made more so by the tragic and untimely passing of its author. While I regret procrastinating reading this for so long, in a way the experience of reading it after Matthew’s death made it all the more impactful, albeit a thousand times eerier and almost disturbingly prescient. It’s also filled with so many moments of joy—and, of course, is frequently hilarious.

Along with so many other fans, I wish Matthew Perry had gotten more time—he was a person who accomplished so much but clearly wanted to do so much more. I wish he’d gotten that chance, but we should all be so grateful for all he gave us while he was alive, including this book.

CW: Addiction/alcoholism/drug abuse; graphic discussions of medical ailments; mentions of death and mild suicidal ideation
