Oh I loved this book. It often takes a little time to get to the “hook” in McMahon’s books but once you do, it’’s impossible to put the book down. I enjoyed the two narratives that we were following. As with her other books, it doesn’t really matter if you figure out something before she makes it explicitly known because the point is more about the characters and their journeys. And I also appreciate that even though the characters always question their sanity, the paranormal/supernatural stuff that is happening is actually happening. You can have a story about sisters and evil wish-granting cold springs. I almost want to just dive in and read it again, which is always fun to do with her books. You can see the breadcrumbs and hints she laid out and get a new understanding of the story. Very highly recommended!

Sisters Jackie and Lexie have a tense adult relationship, partially due to Lexie's erratic behavior.
When Lexie dies unexpectedly at the sprawling New England house once owned by her grandmother, Jackie returns to take care of her affairs.
The undercurrent of the property and their childhood is a pool fed into by a spring known to have medicinal properties.
The pool is a dark body of water rumoured to have no bottom, and to take in exchange for what it gives. Mysterious healings and deaths have taken place, and as readers we are taken through events in 2019, and 1929, when the Brandenburg Springs Hotel was on the property.
Haunted waters. Why hadn't I ever considered the creep factor of this? Well author Jennifer McMahon has it dialled in.
For fans of thrillers with a tinge of supernatural, recommended!

The Drowning Kind starts with such an eerie foretelling and maintains a level of tenseness throughout the pages.  I felt on edge the entire time, which I loved.  With McMahon's signature of telling two tales between timelines that end up interweaving a haunting mystery, this one is definitely a book everyone should pick up soon.

From the characters to the setting, I was immersed immediately into the story and didn't come up for air until well after the final page.
