I read it for a class! Pretty good at approaching the topic of being transgender for children.

This book was a nice read, and I think it belongs in the library. It shows a very realistic portrayal of being transgender and wanting to be acceptable for who you are.

A beautiful book that describes what it is to be transgender in a simple, easy-to-understand way. The story of the book's 12-year-old co-author, the book's illustrator is also transgender. It includes a list of resources for families and parents in the back. I love this one.

This book perfectly breaks down gender dysphoria in a way that is easy for people to grasp. I believe people of ALL ages should read this book. It shows that kids know who they really are from a young age, even if they wait until adulthood to come out. It also shows how to be a supportive person in somebody's life, even if you don't fully understand what they are going through.

I appreciated that it's a book co-written by Maddox Lyons, who is a transgender boy. When he came out to his parents, they looked for children's books and didn't find many. That's why Maddox wanted to write one, so this book speaks from the heart of trans kid. And it's what make the message from the book even more powerful as we follow the hero trying to say that he wants boy's clothes and for his parents to see his "real me". The happiness he feels the first time his mum let him choose boy's swimsuit. Finally having some empowerment over his life. The fact he hated picture day at school, which I'm sure is something trans kids can relate to. Then, when he asked to his parents for a haircut (also a big step that trans kids) and is finally excited for picture day. This book shows again the importance for parents to accept their kid how they are, to have the chance to thrive. The illustrator, Dana Simpson, who is also a transgender woman (so it makes this book even more special) also said how important it was the acceptance from her parents and how she is even closer to them since she told them.

It was nice. But there was such a gendered perspective of how boys and girls dress. It was on every page. I think the message is important and needs to be shared but I would prefer more books that show how fluid gender and (sometimes) clothing can be if it is worn in a certain way.

This was a lovely story executed with the utmost care for Maddox's lived experience. The part that stuck with me the most was when Maddox went swimsuit shopping with his mom and he could "tell she's frustrated. But all year, I've felt frustrated too." That frustration-pipeline starting from Maddox not having the language to effectively explain how he feels to his mother not knowing how to help him was incredibly powerful to me. The text is explicit and clear. The love and support of Maddox's family is unwavering. Maddox is transgender and his friends and family love him for exactly who he is!
