Creepy and fun at the same time—just what I so often want out of horror.

I didn't like this one as much as some other books by the author but I loved Cara, Simon, Uncle Earl and the museum.  The other world was deeply unsettling, as it was supposed to be.

I'm not really sure why this one didn't appeal to me more.
After all, I love the concept of well loved things coming to life to defend the people who loved them and I think the items from other worlds were absolutely fascinating.
It was well written, as her books always are.

Definitely a good, creepy book I would recommend to others. It was a touch slow at the very beginning but got interesting pretty quickly. Not super flowery or excessively wordy in the prose which I personally appreciate.

The middle of this book creeped me out. It’s been a while since I’ve read something and had to put it down for a bit as I was getting a bit spooked.

I liked the characters and the little town with the museum. The portals were weird and disturbing, in a not too unbelievable way.

This the third book I’ve read by Kingfisher and I think it’s safe to say they’re one of my favourite authors.

This was honestly such a great read. I wouldn't say it's prefect, but the intrigue makes up for the any imperfections. I started it late at night when I'd just finished another book planning to just read the first couple of chapters and ended up reading the first 100 pages. I finished it in less than 36 hours. There is just something about the main characters I loved and the tension was spot on for me. It wasn't particularly terrifying (for me at least, but I consume a good amount of horror), but got pretty eerie in some places.

For me, this is a perfect horror book. I read this in a single 24 Hour period - 336 pages!! A record! - as I just could not put it down. Whenever I had to, it followed me. It's hilarious, terrifying, full of dread and horror and genuine laugh out loud, hysterical bits. I long for horror novels that genuinely instill fear in me, and this one nails it. NAILS IT. perfect. 10 out of 10. Utterly horrible and wonderful. Creepy, original, and not to be missed.
