Ninth House not only gives a dark and fascinating mystery to unravel, but it also takes on issues of class, race, and gender without being overly heavy-handed. Alex was a really interesting main character thrown into a world she feels like she doesn't belong in for many reasons. This was like a grown-up Great and Terrible Beauty and I loved every minute.

"Ninth House" is such a creepy yet oddly cozy read. Coming from a life of dead-end jobs and criminal relations, Alex Stern is given a second chance as she's recruited to attend Yale University in the town of New Haven. But of course, not everything is as it seems. While trying to keep up her academia, Alex is pulled into secret organizations, mysterious deaths, and strange paranormal activity.

This dark mystery novel is full of a multitude of plotlines, interesting characters, and an absolutely gorgeous gothic setting. Bardugo brilliantly draws out the secrets among the characters and university, enticing readers to eagerly read to discover more.

Though a little slow at some points, this was such a phenomenal read and a great introduction for me into dark academia literature.

I reread Ninth House in preparation for Hellbent, the sequel, which I am very excited about. Ninth House is a dark academia fantasy featuring Alex Stern, a girl who can see ghosts and is part of Lethe, an oversight body for the secret societies of Yale, tasked with making sure the societies donโ€™t harm students of the town with their magic. After a suspicious murder, Alex must find out if the societies had anything to do with it. I listened to the audiobook this time and Lauren Fortgang does a superb job.

Once again, Leigh Bardugo proves to be amazing. No honestly, this book was very exciting. Ghosts and demons and death and mystery, all wrapped with an academia bow. I'm in!
Really excited for the next one.
