I loved this inventive future world. Cant wait to see what happens with Callie (and Michael) next!

EDIT Upon reviewing my list of read books, I'm changing this to three stars simply because it was not very memorable. Seriously, I know I read a lot of books but I barely recall reading this! o.O

About three-quarters of my way through the book I was set on a three-star rating for this book, but the plot twist at the end convinced me that this book deserved four stars.

The basic idea for the plot (spore wars destroy everyone between the ages of 20-60) was interesting, but not all that realistic. The whole society that develops afterwards is a little odd, however. Many children are left parentless, and instead of doing anything productive about it, the government decides to ban them from working and round them up into an institution, which makes absolutely no sense.

The kids-on-the-run scenario isn't totally original, but I suppose it's believable in this story, because they have no one to look after them. I liked the idea of Prime Destinations - renting out teenage bodies to the elderly is a fascinating concept, and brings up an interesting ethical question as well.

I didn't mind Callie as a character, but she wasn't particularly interesting or smart. I question some of the decisions she makes in the book, such as her romance with Blake, and her decision to shoot the senator in the hand.

The whole situation with Blake was what originally made me want to rate this three stars. I kind of thought something fishy was going on with him from the start because of the way he was so incredibly interested in Callie. I mean I get the fact that she's extremely good looking and a new face in the club or whatever, but in the beginning she didn't give him that much to go on and it seemed like he was a little to into her.

The only other thing that wasn't great about this book was the fact that some of the characters were a little flat. Michael, for example. He was supposedly her neighbor/friend, but he's randomly gone at times and there were some traces of romance with Callie. He also never really develops-- he joins Prime Destinations because Callie did and because it was a good way to earn money.

The two characters I did like were little Sara and the Old Man. Sara was pretty realistic because of her young age and sweetness. I also liked how she originally was excited to be chosen and how Callie had to physically beat her so she wouldn't get chosen. The Old Man is also an excellent villain. He always seems to be one step ahead, and is fantastically creepy in the fact that he purposefully switches his face into the most disturbing profiles.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! There were several minor things that I wasn't too fond of but mostly I was hooked because it had a fast-paced plot and and interesting topic that made me want to read more. I would recommend if you like mild dystopias. Not sure if I'm going to read the sequel or not, but this was definitely a worthwile book.

This had me wanting answers to some of the plot devices that Price didn't really address adequately. Having said that, I still really enjoyed the read and hope that maybe some of my unanswered questions will be addressed in future novels.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. From the very start it took off and it really didn't let up. I liked the world that Price built as well as the characters. I really appreciated how the characters (particularly some of the enders) developed and I hope we'll see more of Madison in the next book. I'm definitely going to be picking up the sequel.

I get that I am no longer a young person so I am not the target audience, and the premise has some kind of kernel of interesting ideas. However the execution of this book is so incredibly disappointing the story was painfully predictable, I could quote lines from it pages before they happened. The characters where one dimensional at best and that one dimension was almost always cartoonish in proportions. The whole plot as it was unfolded was so ridiculous as to just be unbelievable and boiled down to old people are evil. And the reveal at the end ........ ugh

It was an interesting concept. I enjoyed the originality of the piece although, it did remind me of Scott Westerfeld's trilogy (because I don't count Extras) The Uglies.

The storyline was a bit confusing at times but I sum that up to the whole having to create an entirely new world since it takes place in the future, however, for must of the stuff, the reader can catch on fast. I also think that more will become clear as the books continue, particularly with Old Man and Blake since I'm dying to know more.

I wish the romance aspect had been dealt with a bit better since it felt rushed and virtually didn't happen. I hope it plays a bigger and stronger role in the future novels.

All in all, it was a decent read. Kept me interested and I finished it in a day (but that's nothing new if it's remotely interesting). It's not good enough to deserve my extremely and undying love but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future novels by this author, particularly in the series.

Oh, also.. I adore the cover. I just wish Price had gone into more detail with the significance or metaphor behind Michael's drawing because I feel like I might be putting untrue facts into what I get out of it.

This book took me the bones of three months to read, which was probably my own fault rather than the book's - fifth year destroyed my will to read :( It was actually a pretty great book, the premise was excellent and the characters were well written, albeit slightly basic. The plot was probably the best thing about Starters, I thought it was constructed very well with pieces of the puzzle being revealed gradually as Callie moved from location to location. I really enjoyed the ending - it provided closure on the main plot of the novel while also creating a sense of intrigue about what happens next. I have my own theories about the mysterious Old Man but I guess I'll just have to wait til next year to see if I'm right...
