This book was very good. It really put you into the minds of the two main characters. The conflict of doing the right thing versus supporting your "family" was very poignant. The book kept me engaged. The story, though completely fiction, seemed so realistic that I wish I could go watch the video of the incident on YouTube. This book definitely made me think and consider different points of views. It is relevant to what is going on in the world today.

This is a book everyone should read and truly reflect on. It is beautifully written and does an amazing job at taking the reader to a place to understand and sympathize with both boys who are struggling with the topic of police brutality, racism, biases, and how to reflect on if you are making the world better. This book can open some amazing discussions and help people learn if they allow themselves too.

I have yet to read a Jason Reynolds book that doesn't leave me thinking. Not as ambiguous of an ending as Long Way Down, but about as powerful.
The story manages to capture the complexities surrounding issues of racism, brutality, and identity among other topics.
Read in the context of being asked to teach to 8th graders in the fall. A strong text for comparing and contrasting perspectives, as well as some other literary elements.

Over the past couple years I’ve really learned the importance of sitting in my discomfort. There were certain parts of this book that caused me to put it down and to take a break. To think not just about the themes of the book but to also think about myself. It’s important to read things that actually make you think critically about the world and yourself.
This is such a needed story and something we need so much more of, discussing police brutality and racism in America in such a wonderful way. It definitely deserves more hype. Highly highly recommend.
A powerful, thought provoking book. So timely, so honest, rage inducing, shame inducing, action inspiring. Complicated characters...the black boy beaten by a police officer is the son of a police officer. The white boy who witnesses it is like family to the police officer. I got this for my 12 year old to read, but now that I’ve read it, a lot of the banter between characters and looking towards graduation would go over his head.
