A good book, well written and set at the cusp of London’s  Industrial Revolution which seemed well-researched. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and I’m hoping the next book picks up speed.

3.5 stars i loved the plot twists and i loved the characters i was so frustrated at the end when i had so many unanswered questions i cant wait to read the rest of this series and im curious how these characters will play into the other series

i am a jem carstairs cheerleader before i am human!! the book gets a 3.5 from me - it’s clearly very introductory (which is natural given that it’s the first book in a prequel trilogy) but isn’t too heavy on lore-dumping or throwing terms and their definitions around, you naturally come to terms with the world that’s being built. some moments had me gripped or physically reacting and i generally had a good time, i’m intrigued by the two remaining books in this particular series.

I expected more from this series. I like the Mortal Instrument series (Clare) better than these. While these books do tie into the Mortal Instruments and help create some background on shadowhunters, demons, vampires, etc., this book fell short. Tessa's shape shifting ability wasn't enough to keep the story alive. Also, the two male characters are meant to be like Jace and Alex, but they aren't close. I won't read the second book and, in fact, didn't finish the last 50 pages of this book. I figured 350 pages of the story was enough.
