sigh… kuzguns propaganda worked… i loved the book 😔

THEY'RE MY FAMILY

I’m giving this a 2.75 instead of a 3 purely out of pettiness. I read this out of curiosity because I wanted to know who these gay little Herondale and Carstairs characters were my friend kept talking about. The premise started off interesting but the further I went on the more I found myself being taken out by some of the dialogue (especially Tessa’s). The characters were fine and enjoyable, but the things Tessa would say would make me laugh at some points. Like girl your brother is being tortured by the voices and is evil man’s goon and you’re worried about whether or not you would have been an ugly baby? LOCK IN GIRL LOCK IN!!!!

Anyways this was an okay read & it scratched the YA series itch I had been craving for a few months. I will learn more about you Mr Jem in time.. in time…

tldr: one of my fav guilty pleasure/nostalgia reads. there is just something so timeless and unserious about a story with all the right twists and turns and compelling characters. no one acts or speaks like a real human and sometimes, that's liberating. i was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly this read and how well it aged for a 2010s ya novel. honestly, as long as you don't think any harder than that about it (which, if i had to guess, was never the intention here), the whole thing just such an endearing experience.

Interesting premise & I love the setting as well as the atmosphere. However, it was a little cliché plot-wise at times and I couldn't connect well with the characters. I also don't like the cliffhanger in the epilogue. To me, that's overdone in general. Not a bad book, but not the best one I've ever read either.
