It’s no Kitchen Confidential, but it's an important story to be told--an inspiration for anyone coming from humble roots and willing to follow where the wind blows.

In listening to the Audible version, Aaron Sanchez narrates as if he's sharing his life story with his children and future grandchildren. It's an intimate look into his world of celebrity cheffing, complete with hidden struggles of depression, divorce and complicated relationships.

From a literary standpoint, the work could have benefited from a discerning editor.

Don't overlook the recipes that accompany the book, including a PDF for those with the Audible version. Can't wait to try some of them.

Good stuff about the beginning of the food network and the importance of acknowledging the helping hands that lifted you and mentoring the ones following you. And it’s subtle but the importance of having a team is there - you can’t open and run a restaurant solely on your own.

Aaron is transparent about his mental health struggles (this is published 18 months after Anthony Bourdain's death, which means he was writing or beginning to write right around that time.) I did not know Aaron Sanchez was a food tv star and did AB-style travel shows in Mexico & SAmerica - now I want to find his Iron Chef episode.

I'm not well-read in the food/chef memoir subgenre, but I really enjoyed this. (And now I'm hungry!) I have probably seen Aaron Sanchez on a food network show or two, but I wouldn't really have known who he was. However, I'm a fan now. I appreciated his perspective, his stories, his mother's example, and his realizations about his missteps along the way. He doesn't present himself as perfect, but as someone who had a lot to learn and took advantages of learning opportunities along the way (especially after he left his teenage years behind). He emphasized how hard a person has to work to make success happen, and how fickle trends can be. He didn't shy away from talking about mental health, or abuses of power within the restaurant industry, but he was optimistic about the possibilities for change and improvement when they come to light.

I picked up this book because I really enjoy watching Aaron on Masterchef. The book is fantastic, and a really great insight into his life growing up through his career. I also enjoyed all the recipes he threw in, in between chapters. I took off one star because I felt he repeated things a LOT - in the sense that he would say the same thing but with different wording over the course of 3-4 sentences. His life story itself is so good though. Can't wait to see what's next for this fantastic chef!

I first saw Aaron Sanchez on Chopped and have had a crush on him since then. He’s so debonair and suave and OH so handsome! Reading this book though gave me so much respect for his work ethic and him as a person. I loved his voice in this book and am just beyond impressed! Planning to try to make one of the recipes soon and to go check out Johnny Sanchez in Nola real soon!!
