Turns out this is the second book in a series (and I actually own the first one), but I didn't realize until I was well into it, so I guess I'm reading it out of order. Anyway, this was a good read. I tend to like Macmillan's works. This is a bit older than some of her other stuff that I've read and it kind of shows. I don't think I've read anything else from her that was part of a series and honestly, this being part of a series didn't add anything. If anything, trying to intermingle Clemo's personal drama and set up future books took more away from the story than anything.
All that to say, the actual plot was good, it was twisty and sad without being over the top tragic, and I liked the characters Macmillan included.

Media exploitation of events to gain an audience and the bias and prejudice against immigrants trying hard for a new life are front and center as Detective Jim Clemo tries to find out what happened the night that young Noah Sadler either fell or was pushed into a canal. His young Somali friend Abdi was with him but he refused to say a word suffering from what everyone thought was shock, and before the police could pressure him to talk he ran away. It is up to Jim to discover if, as he suspects, the only witness is lying and if Abdi ran because of what happened to Noah or because of something even darker and more dangerous. A heartrending, but explosive novel, apropos of the times; it tells the story of family love and family lies, and the friendship between two teen boys as each family tries to save their sons. Odd Child Out is richly written with wonderful characters, and Macmillan’s flair for fiction hits quite close to truth and reality.

I listened to Odd Child Out by Gilly Macmillan. Noah and Abdi, young friends, snuck out at night. Noah fell into a river and is hospitalized and Abdi refuses to speak. It was an engaging listen with complex characters. The ending was disappointing.

Gripping, twisted but with a touch. It’s a story of friendship, family, and sense of belongingness. The theme is apt to what is happening right now, a relationship between a boy from America & a boy from Somalia, who developed a great friendship until tragedy happen.
Timely and sensitive look at refugee issues, centered on a Somali boy suspected of pushing his white, cancer-stricken friend into a canal. Descriptions of Bristol a plus. Same detective as in What She Knew.
I thoroughly enjoyable read, and a quick one, but not as good as the first Clemo novel. I had unraveled the plot about 200 pages in and from there it was just a case of waiting for everyone else to figure it out. I don’t think there was enough Clemo angst in this story - part of why I really enjoyed the first novel were his personality and the emotional highs and lows that he went through.
First time in a while that I have read in book in less than 24 hours. I found this book gripping with twists and turns from beginning to end. I did find the end to be a bit of a cliff hanger however.
