This is one of the weirder books I’ve read this year. But I couldn’t put it down. Probably won’t seek out more books by this author because it’s just not really my style, but no regrets reading this one.

It started off so promising and then really didn’t stick any landing. I think what bugged me is there was a potentially super cool aspect of the story that didn’t get clarified or revealed until the last few pages.

Adelaide’s courage shines through as she navigates the harsh Montana terrain. Imagine being one of the only Black individuals in a land where acceptance is scarce. She faces prejudice, isolation, and the weight of her secret. Her determination to bury the past or redeem it is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

“Lone Women” masterfully blends horror, historical fiction, and fantasy. It’s a weird western that defies genre boundaries. LaValle weaves a spellbinding narrative, revealing the complexities of life as a lone Black woman in a time and place where survival is a daily battle.

Excellent book. I *love* the gothic atmosphere, the western feel and the never ending suspense and dread. Victor LaValle pulls you in and keeps you there, the natural heir to Stephen King really does feel like the right move here. It's that kind of feeling that you get when you discover an author for the first time and know you have to read their entire back catalogue ASAP. Such a great exploration of socioeconomic culture and the need for retribution really gives this the depth that it needs.

This was such a fun, satisfying ride. I especially fell in love with the main character as her story unfolded. She is so strong and independent, but you also see her be incredibly vulnerable. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style, it was never overly complicated, so the story really became the focus. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

more like 3.5 stars this was good but I just wanted something more from it!!! I liked the ending but I needed the third act to be a little less rushed

Was a March, 2023 BOTM pick. Not my usual fare, but an enjoyable read. Was classified as a horror book, tho I’d call it more suspense.:::

Genre defying horror-western-fantasy. The atmosphere was so dark and intense. I couldn’t stop listening. Just had to find out “what’s in the box?!” and how it all ends.
