Whew, what a ride!

I love the way the horror in this built gradually throughout the story until close to the end when things really ramped up for the major confrontation.

I do wish we had gotten a little more opportunity to develop Adelaide's relationship with Birdie and Fiona in depth, which I think would have helped further cement
the town's willingness to turn on them
. As it is, I understand their racial and sexual "otherness" was enough, but I would have appreciated a scene showcasing some of the townsfolks' discomfort.

Other than that, I have no complaints. I love how LaValle plays with the concept of what makes a monster, and adding a theme of forgiveness to this was really interesting.

I had issues with this book from about the first quarter on, but pushed through to almost the end and then skimmed the rest. Overall, I was really disappointed in this book. The book seemed to struggle to form a coherent plot with very little forward momentum occurring. Although there is the march of time, and there are plot points that happen, the book seemed to lack a strong drive forward so it seemed that plot points just occurred instead of being connected. The characters were all uninteresting and shallow, with most of them having surface level reasons of existence but lacked strong reasons to be in the book. It was also unclear what the book was going for when it came to horror. On one hand, we have the "trunk" which wasn't very interesting, and all of the plot points around it were uninteresting. On the other hand, we have mysterious ghosts in the plains that just show up occasionally. Finally, the writing was fine, but the book would some times use really modern phrases that was really jarring like "She rode the F*** out of there" that was not really in tone with the rest of the book.

Overall, this book lacked a strong plot, interesting characters, and an interesting horror premise and each time there was a plot twist, the book got just a little bit worse. Overall, the first 5 pages were worth the read but not the rest.

Wow! I don't even knew how to classify this genre bending novel except to say it was a thoroughly engaging read!
