I didn't enjoy this one like LaValle's other works. There was something about it that just didn't hit the mark, almost as if the author were forced to cut out large amounts of writing.

Epic and brilliant and healing!

such a gripping story with great characters, even if the fantasy and horror parts unfortunately fell a bit flat for me.

Definitely needed to know what was in the trunk. The storytelling reminds me of James McBride’s The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. Once that trunk opened? What a turn of events lol

Honestly DNF, read 213 out of 270-something pages. This book started off good but the story took a bad left turn and never recovered from that. Lots of extra details that were not relevant to the story line. When you get to the “who” the demon is, you could probably stop reading after that. This book put me in a lull, probably because the story lost my interest.
