I couldn’t recall where I got this book recommendation from but I had downloaded the library e-book before a vacation. I started and finished the e-book it on an 8h transatlantic plane trip (without wifi so I had no idea what this story was about!)

Very engrossing!
More of a thriller than what I usually read. Amazingly rich characters.

I’m fascinated about so many things in this book

-women homesteaders,
-the real medical basis to explain Adelaide’s secret
-the underlying truths how women have suffered violence at the hands of men (Adelaide’s mom, Grace)
-gender bending roles (Bette, Sam)
-an asian woman named Fiona ! (This took me a while to adapt!)

I’ll likely try to re-read this in a more leisurely fashion!

After a bit of research- Apparently this book was listed by many including NY Times, NPR, Washington Post, LA Times as best books of 2023!

dark mysterious tense

What a strange, wonderful book. It was terribly satisfying, something I find in short measure these days. Taught me history I didn’t know: the homesteading of land in Montana by women, including women of color, told a story with tension-sprung, short, excruciating chapters, and well, who doesn’t like STOP READING RIGHT NOW a monster in a trunk?

Truly not what I was expecting at all. I remember watching a booktuber or booktok influencer mentioning this as “boring” and I’m going to have to politely disagree lol. I will say up to the midway point the characters and the setting were established but I didn’t have that page turning feverish feeling all readers hope for when reading a new book. However, that other half of the book CARRIED! The history, the themes, the violence, the gore, and the surprises I wasn’t expecting were worth the journey. I’m a new fan of this author and of his wife (shout out to her for her advice on the ending).
