Overall it was very good. The beginning was great and I thought 5 stars, the middle got slow so maybe only 4, and the ending was good so again 5. I would definitely suggest this book to other people.

The year is 1915, and Adelaide Henry is fleeing California after a terrifying accident causes her parents death because no one can know what really happened. Traveling only with a very large and heavy trunk, Adelaide makes her way to Montana in the hopes to receive a piece of land, promised by the government. The only problem? The trunk can never be opened, and when it does people disappear. What secret is Adelaide running from, and what baggage does she bring along?

I’ve been putting off reading Lone Women for awhile now, which is obvious by the March 2023 ARC symbol on its cover… woops. I’ve heard good things about all of Lavalle’s books, but didn’t know what to expect. I really enjoyed Lone Women, and had completely different predictions on what was inside Adelaide’s trunk.  It was an easy, historical horror read that’s great for anyone who enjoyed Alma Katsu’s The Hunger. Lone Women is definitely worth a read for any horror or historical fiction lover!

A book that was quite good overall. Very readable. Great characters. It incorporated a unique part of American history, which is the relatively unknown fact that lone women, including Black women, were legally allowed to homestead and acquire land. I think this story would've been just as interesting, maybe more so, without the supernatural aspect. This aspect added a little bit of horror/creepiness but that could've been done without it.

Either way, I liked this book except it ended a little too "nice".

Very well written with a cast of mostly interesting characters and some pretty fun elements of magical realism. I do wish however that the author hadn't choose to hammer in the racial aspects and perhaps had let the reader come to thise conclusions themselves. I always appreciate a unique atmosphere and different approaches to race but that particular aspect of this novel felt like it was assumed the reader needed to be spoon fed the point a bit which I always dislike. Sort of a morality info dump.

That said the prose was great and the story was interesting and unique. Would have loved a bit more historical realism alongside the magical but that's probably just nit picky on my part. I'll be reading more from Mr. lavalle, if not perhaps immediately.
