Familial shame, a deadly secret, and a world that is kill or be killed. Adelaide Henry had to figure out how to be a lone woman with the object of her family's shame padlocked in a trunk; when this trunk opens, death seeps out. This is a historical, horror, feministic story that sinks its claws into you from the start and latches on until the end
Discovering what lies within the trunk is where the real fun begins. Most people know a thing or two about complicated families but not many have complicated family members thatthey keep chained up and hidden from society until the day they decide to rid the Earth of them. I enjoyed the cast of characters around Addy, especially the lovers Fiona and Birdie. Through them we were able to see how Black and brown people's acceptance is tied to our usefulness and once a white replacement comes along our purpose have been served.
The few issues that I had were in regard to seemingly big moments that were passed over such as Mrs. Reed having a child like Elizabeth and them killing it (then again she did die soon after and I believe only Sam knew so maybe they didn't mention it, but I doubt it), the random couple that helped Elizabeth and said she didn't understand her own language (who tf was that and why were they there), the reason behind Grace killing her husband (was it because he refused to let Sam be who they wanted to be), and most importantly and what I had hoped for, Elizabeth and Addy deciding to be the sisters that they were meant to be despite their differences. I also just wish more time was spent with Elizabeth, the loneliest of the lone women.
With a bit of work this could have highly rated, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and look forward to checking out more from Lavelle. I would have loved an epilogue, seeing how Addy and Elizabeth may have learned to communicate, see the person that Sam grew up to be, and get a deeper glimpse into this town that they built for themselves. A town ran soley and populated by women? Sign me up.
