While this story dives into different subjects every now and then, the main theme is escapism. 
It is portrayed in many different forms: religion, fandom, substance abuse, anger, and even leading to anxiety due to some characters not being able to escape.

It’s a journey of the characters realizing that they can’t keep trying to escape their lives and unique struggles, but need to confront them.

While Alice Oseman to me has always written strong, multilayered, and diverse characters, I think this cast may have the most unique and gripping relationships I have witnessed in one of their books.
