I loved the mythology and world building of Dinétah in this post-climate-disaster world. The action was engaging (I don’t like overly long or descriptive fight or battle scenes. They’re boring and tedious to me). This got right to the point.
Maggie Hoskins is a strong and convincing female lead. I love a reluctant hero/warrior.
A very good ending.
I wish there was a guide to the pronunciations of the Diné.

Beautifully written and engaging throughout! Some aspects of the plot did not feel fully explained to me but I was happy to be along for Maggie’s journey and learn more about Navajo culture and this specific Sixth World that the author has created. I hope to pick up the next book at some point!
EDIT Jan 2025: Removing my number rating having heard the controversy about the author’s background and questionable treatment of Navajo/Diné culture that Native critics have pointed out. Not sure if it helps but I don’t want to an include rating based on what I had perceived to be an accurate and fair modernization of this culture’s beliefs and practices, but now am not as sure.

Thoroughly enjoyed this urban fantasy. It has a little bit of post-apocalyptic setting, there is a lot of references to The Big Water which was a flood that was a catastrophic event. The main character, Maggie, has clan powers (native american) due to an attack on her as a teenager. She uses these to hunt monsters. The relationships were well written & the tension builds in a natural way. The ending left me wanting more.
For fans of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson & Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels.

The mythology of the Sixth World is the big draw here. It is absolutely fascinating. This is a pretty dark and graphic book, and thus won't be for everyone. But it's worth it to experience the world that Roanhorse has built. Dinétah is a place that I look forward to spending more time in.
The world was interesting. I tried reading this at the same time as another book and was into that book more. Will try this one again.
