I wish I had known it was hardcore Urban Fantasy beforehand because my thoughts on them really end up depending on the writing style. And I didn't like the writing style for this book. Overall, I felt like the book expected you to be in the know, but also not at the same time as a reader in regards to Native American culture.

Within the first few pages the protagonist chops off the head of a 12 year old girl because she's "infected" with evil. But before she does that, she explains, through narration, that she is also "infected" with evil and has been for a long time and she has to fight against it. Seems like she could have given the girl the same chance she was giving herself.
It's not clear if the evil infecting the protagonist is the same evil infecting the girl, but the protagonist herself draws a direct parallel so they must at least be similar. Or it's bad writing. Either way, the protagonist murdering a child for reasons that are, at best, vague--if not entirely immoral--is a great way for me to put down your book.

I'm. In. Love.
I had this book on my want to read list for a couple of years now, so I was very excited to get it for Christmas this past year. Holy crap, im even happier that I got it now. I need the next book, STAT!
While reading it, I thought to myself "this kinda reminds me of The Lightning Thief", which is a compliment in my opinion as I Love The Lightning Thief. The thing is, this is Clearly Not A Middle Grade Novel, which I just loved so much about it!! I honestly would classify this as a New Adult rather than Young Adult, which is so refreshing because I'm in the New Adult range more than the Young Adult range.
But enough about me. Trail of Lightning has some of the best storytelling I've seen in a while! And the Plot Twists are set up so well!! My God! If you like Young Adult fantasy, you have to read this book!
