I got this book from the author through a Give Away and I'm so excited! I wanted to sit down and read this is one sitting but life kept getting in the way. This just meant I got to savor every moment of the journey. A lot of people are describing this as a Mad Max Fury Road esque book and I definitely agree but it made me think that this is where the Western Genre should be going. Righteous Women traveling the land striking out against those who would mean to do harm.

I think the ultimate description is a Navajo Buffy the Vampire Slayer goes on a Mad Max Fury Road type journey for redemption meeting a few familiar characters along the way. This book is wholly a Navajo book in every little moment and it gave such an incredible depth to the story that took it to the next level.

Honestly my only problem is that I have to wait so long for a sequel. Definitely read this book. Definitely buy two copies and give one away.

Fast, brutal, gritty, and somber all come at you in waves in the first book of the Sixth World series! I haven't finished it yet but I can already tell that I'll be ordering the second book before I do!

'Trail of Lightning' by Rebecca Roanhorse is the first book in a series called The Sixth World, and it was the September pick for my book club.

Maggie Hoskie is a dangerous monster hunter, but she's also pretty emotionally damaged. When she gets a new partner to help her, she's not sure if she needs him around. There are things both of them aren't telling each other. There is also a weird mystery with someone creating monsters.

I liked this urban fantasy and the characters that populate the world. I like the setting, even though there are things that get set up that don't seem to have much to do with the story yet. This is a really strong debut novel and based on the award nominations, I'm not the only one who feels that way. I recommend it.

Trail of Lightning is a pretty good "urban" (though, obviously, not urban) fantasy novel. It's not YA technically, but it's YA in spirit. It features a young female protagonist who is alienated from her community who possesses a power that she believes is a curse. She learns to believe in herself while collecting a rag-tag group of friends, etc, etc... Despite having read this story a dozen times in the last few years, something about this one charmed me enough to read the sequel. This would be a good intro to "urban" fantasy for younger readers.
