Interesting and a very different setting from most urban fantasies.

Welcome to the Sixth World

Steeped in Navajo mythology, Roanhorse’s debut novel takes us on a fantastic journey to post-apocalyptic Dinetah. This new take on urban fantasy kept me leaping from chapter to chapter to find out where Maggie would go next and what incredible people, monsters, and immortals she would encounter. I deeply enjoyed this book and am happy to add Roanhorse to my list of favorite authors.

good good good but not great

I thought this was well done, using the urban fantasy format in a Native futurist, post-climate-apocalypse setting. I’m finding apocalyptic stories to be a bit too much lately so I think I’ll take a break before picking up the sequel but it was quite good.

4.5

Really enjoyed this but the ended was a bit muddled. Still not sure I entirely understand it.

Great world building, strong premise. The main character gets a little wobbly for me at times, but overall a really good read.

Trail of Lightning

I did like the world. Post apocalyptic, water rose and destroyed most of the world, and the Dine built a wall.

Let me see nope now I can not remember why the Gods came to be again, but yes in this new world Gods walk, monsters hunt and heroes are born. I do love mythology.

I also really wanted a new UF series and even though it was good, it was never great and it did not even compel me to read more. I will end it here. A fun ride, but I am not invested enough to read more

It is the tale of a monsterslayer (I was more interested in her relationship with a certain hero, what was going on there?), her new sidekick, kicking some monster butt and Coyote, oh he is always around isn't he. The eternal trickster.

I felt the world was more fascinating then the story itself.

If the Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels series has a baby it would be Trail of Lightning. You have Maggie, a tough as nails monsterslayer in a world where most of civilization and technology have been wiped out, who has been abandoned by her mentor. She’s called upon to find and defeat a witch that’s creating creatures that are wiping out whole towns. She teams up with Kai, a handsome and charming medicine man with some secrets of his own.

I really enjoyed this book. There’s some great world building and complex characters that I want to know more about. I really liked that it was steeped in Native American lore but had a paranormal twist. Maggie and Kai’s relationship has a lot of potential and I want to see where it goes.

I would definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a new urban fantasy series to binge. I just picked up the second book and am diving in!
