I listened to the audiobook version of this and loved it! It has a wonderful cast of characters, a great plot, and I loved the Navajo mythology I wasn’t familiar with. This is the third novel I read this year that features a trickster figure from a different culture. I guess everyone realized how fun they are at some point in history.
Maggie is an incredible character, though a little slow sometimes. A couple of times she left me thinking “no shit” when she was the last person to figure something out. I love her though. I want her to be happy.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and excited to read the second one. Heads up: it’s not for the faint of stomach!

This was such a well written and intriguing story that left me quite unsatisfied. It wasn’t the mini cliffhanger that was the problem. The antagonists motives were unclear to me and I finished the book confused.

SPOILERS We are not told why Coyote hates Neizghání or why Neizghání is so set on killing Kai. We are told that he loves her but there is no evidence in the book that he does actually love her. Neizghání isn’t presented as evil so I would have liked his character to have been more flushed out so I could understand his motives. Also why did Coyote not have a contingency plan for if a trained killer would try to kill him after that confession?? All in all the journey was amazing, I was just disappointed in the destination. I still plan on reading the sequel though.

Beautiful and binge able but there was something keeping me from reaching for it.

I really enjoyed this one. The pacing was good and I enjoyed the story, there were a few times when I thought I knew what was going to happen, and then the story swerved on me.

I could probably take it or leave it as an audiobook, but it definitely passed the time for my drive from Texas and across Oklahoma and Missouri.

I raced through this book, unable to put it down, then stopped with twenty pages left because I was so nervous for my beloved characters. I finally forced myself to finish it today and am excited to start the second book, which I already picked up from the library. This book is so fantastical and yet deeply grounded in the genuine emotion and relationships of engaging characters, the realities of trauma and violence, and the questions of identity and worth we all struggle with. This world could have required too much explanation, but instead it feels very natural, easy to fall into. My only beef is my difficulty finding fanfiction about it. Please don't make me fall in love with Kai and Magdalena and then find that there is no fanfiction about them, that is just rude. If you've written or found some sweet fanfics, hook me up, please.

Fascinating. I know very little about Dine’ (Navaho) culture, mythology, or language, so reading this was like finding an entirely new pathway into some of my favorite genres—folklore and post apocalyptic fiction. Maggie is an intriguing heroine, damaged but strong and smarter than she knows. I look forward to getting to know her, her world, and her companions better in the sequel.
