It's an intense read that really makes you think about gender stereotypes and what drives them. What drives humans to harm or to chase power. Very heavy read at times but very interesting also.

There were a few times I stopped and though “what the hell did I just read?” in a way that was both slightly horrified and amazed at the same time.

The set-up is great and an amazing look at how cultures and civilization can shift. The different situations and stories that are followed and how they all connect and weave is some masterful storytelling (and one of my personal favorite plot devices).

It puts a mirror to society in a world backwards to our own through the perspective of many other characters

it did fissile out at the end though because we never find out what the catalysm is exactly

Riveting. Electric. I cannot remember the last time I read so much in such a short time span. Meeting somewhere between fantasy, an allegory, and an astute critique of how we form our notions of sex and gender, this story expands into so many directions all at once.

No wonder I liked this book, the author was basically Margaret Atwood’s apprentice. Interesting and engaging book, but I do think there were many ideas that should’ve been touched upon. It focused on only the two sexes, with brief mentions of ‘trans’ or ‘non-binary’ persons, but I think it should’ve been a greater focus. I loved the many points of view and the storytelling from various characters. Maybe this is just the engineer in me but I also think some of the evolutionary science could’ve been more cohesive. The ending was a bit lackluster considering the quick pace of the novel. Good read though, I can see why it’s a bestseller.
