This was such an interesting & unique book! Normally books can be described as being one category but not this one. It was a combination of contemporary fiction, romance, mystery & suspense/thriller. I had no idea where this book was going when it started out & you don’t really get answers until about halfway through. It kept me guessing & turning the pages. I really enjoyed it!
I liked this book, although it turned out to be not at all what I expected. I found the writing compelling and the first half of the book completely drew me in. It seemed I’d found a thriller I was actually going to enjoy. But as the twists unfolded I became less enthralled. This is a serious story about love, loss, deception and healing. The second half of the story seemed rushed and the serious themes given short shrift in the effort to get the story concluded.
I loved this thriller! Mysterious, good atmosphere, characters you care about! Quick, fun, entertaining read.
This book was a bit all over the place, but the story was a good one. It is told in perspectives of both Emma and her husband Leo. It seems like they have the perfect life, with their child and Emma's clean bill of health.
Except Leo comes across some papers that are a bit confusing, as they contridict things Emma has told him throughout their life together. He confronts her about it and the book tries to explain what is going on. There is another woman who has disappeared - is Emma connected to this?
Without going into more detail for fear of spoilers, the book does a very good job of showing Leo's grief, trying to understand his wife. He tries to reconcile what he knows with the new truths he is finding out. He needs to understand why his wife lied and if he wants to forgive her.
This is a bit of a thriller and a bit of a domestic drama. There were a few things that were a bit weird (Jill's behavior... not explained well?) but overall it was well done.

To be honest... it took me almost half way through the book to get sucked in. Once I was, I couldn't put it down!
What I liked: The plot was addictive and I really did want to know what she was hiding.
What I didn’t like: It feels like some twists were written in just for the sake of having twists. It couldn’t decide if it was a slow burn or fast-paced thriller and the switch in tone felt chaotic. The ending was lackluster.

It was fine, a little bit of a slow burn. Wouldn’t have picked it up if not for a book club. I just can’t get behind a book where the entire plot is poor communication and someone lying to their spouse for a decade..
HELP! I’VE FALLEN AND I CAN’T GET UP! No, this isn’t a Life Alert ad, this is an elated bookworm on a literary high! For I have fallen in love with The Love of My Life!
I was swept out to the sea of the Northumberland beaches, awash with emotion over Walsh’s delicious words and the breathtaking story of Emma and Leo. This book is not merely a literary mystery… this is a novel drenched with family secrets, dripping with unthinkable plot twists that left my heart strings plucked and sore!
The Philbers have a picturesque life…
Emma: the matriarch, lymphoma survivor and successful marine biologist.
Leo: the adoring husband and doting father who writes obituaries for a living.
Ruby: their beautiful, bright, miracle baby.
John Keats: their spunky family pup.
When Emma’s lymphoma returns, Leo secretly begins preparing his wife’s obituary. While gathering details about his beloved’s life, he quickly realizes that his wife has many, many secrets.
I went into this book blind and BOY WAS I GLAD I DID! It had a slow burn start but a third of the way through, Walsh took a tank of gasoline and lit my soul ON FIRE! The best way to go into this book is blind – you will not be disappointed!
