A quick, dirty read. It’s a classic noir story, thickened with that oily Jim Thompson goo: a couple in love, in the course of their escape, finds that they aren’t the people they thought they were. Only with a lot of bad, bad things along the way. But it’s the grossness of it that sticks. Thompson is the Ivan Albright of crime novelists.

Maybe I'm missing something b/c I don't understand all the 5-star reviews. The story takes a weird turn at Chapter 14 and then the book just ends. At least it was short.

(4.5) Interestingly enough, I thought most of this book was Thompson attempting to write a propulsive thriller sans his usual existential musings. But by the end, you see what the book has become and what he is trying to say the whole time...and it's frightening. Purely frightening. A remarkable read, perhaps my second favorite of his after Pop. 1280.

a Good Jim Thompson. At least a couple chapters in there I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

Another gritty Thompson book. He writes such great villains, or anti-heroes, that you find yourself rooting for them despite their horrible ways.

I didn't enjoy this novel as much as Jim Thomspon's The Killer Inside Me. It was a litter far fetched. The general plot line was enjoyable, but the last half of the book is pretty weak.
